Simon Rees


Every wave leaps up or laps at the sand,
but then is drawn back and engulfed by another;
every leaf flares up like sparks in the fire
before its stem breaks as the trees lose their cover.

Nothing exists which is more than a passage
to new forms, for nature is never old hat,
and once it is empty each cloud drifting high
will scatter as winds blow it this way and that.
